Are you new to Aspen hiking and Snowmass hiking? Check out these 5 hiking tips for beginners, and in no time at all, you’ll be hitting the local hiking trails with confidence!

Tip 1 - Hydrate to Hike
Staying hydrated at 8,000+ feet is key to avoid altitude sickness. When you hit the trail, carry 1-2 liters of water in a backpack. It’s always better to have more water than you think you’ll need. And if you don’t want to be saddled with the weight, carry a water filter or iodine tablets, so that you can purify water as needed.

Tip 2 - Snack Attack
When you’re hiking up a steep trail, your entire body is working hard. If you stay fueled, you’ll enjoy your hike a whole lot more. For a long hike, make sure that your backpack contains something along the lines of granola bars, bananas, almonds, and a sandwich for lunch. A couple of granola bars should be plenty for a shorter hike.

Tip 3 - Dress the Part
Wear layers of quick dry clothing, so that you can add and subtract layers as needed. It’s also important to pack a raincoat and rain pants, if rain is in the forecast. And with increased exposure to harmful UV radiation at higher altitudes, wear polarized sunglasses, a hat, and plenty of sunscreen. Also, wear comfortable, sturdy hiking shoes or boots.

Tip 4 - Know Where You’re Going
Get familiar with where you’re going by reading a trail description. This will tell you how long the hike is; starting and ending elevations; and notable landmarks. It’s always a good idea to bring your hiking book with you, especially if it has a map. A compass and GPS device are also great tools to have when you’re in the wilderness.

Tip 5 - Listen to Your Body
Coming from sea level to a mile or two above sea level is a dramatic change for your body. Select a hike that matches your fitness level and ability to adjust to altitude. Going too high too soon can easily lead to altitude sickness. So, listen to your body. Take it at your pace, and remember to enjoy the views!
